So as part of my new “Buffalo Life” I decided I wanted to start challenging myself more. Rowing the Atlantic is something I’ve always wanted to do. When I was 15 my rugby coach took part in the Talisker Atlantic (for the second time), I remember how I would go into the library every day and follow his progress on the large screen. I loved the idea of one day following in his footsteps. So I just dropped a little “Fancy rowing the Atlantic?” message in a Whatsapp group chat with my best mates and that was it. Sometimes, taking the leap is the hardest part of the journey…I get the feeling this isn’t going to be one of those occasions…So far I have commited to the 2026 challenge, I’ve invited my best mates Broads (above left) and Dan (above middle) to join me but thus far no commitments (come on lads…pull your fingers out). So I could be doing it as a trio, a pair or even on my own.
About the Race
The Talisker Atlantic Rowing Challenge is a daring transoceanic race, where teams of determined individuals set out to row across the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. This grueling journey spans thousands of miles, testing both physical endurance and mental fortitude. Having taken a considerable hiatus from such extreme challenges, the prospect of finally preparing and participating fills me with a renewed sense of excitement and anticipation. It's an opportunity to rekindle my spirit for adventure and push the boundaries of what I thought possible. The thrill of navigating the open sea, propelled by sheer human effort, is an exhilarating prospect that beckons me to the waves. This challenge promises not only to be an extraordinary test of strength but also a soul-stirring return to the realm of unparalleled adventure.
So what are the next steps? Well…a load of training, that’s the obvious one…oh! And I need to find a boat….another obvious one…and then find sponsors / partners and a charity / charities to fundraise for. Shiiiiiiiiite. I guess best get a move on then…Once all that’s done, it’s time to prepare minds & bodies for over 1.2 million oar strokes, 30+ days at sea and the isolation…all the isolation. Theres also the small thing of figuring out how to get the (previously listed but so far un-aquired) boat to San Sebastian, La Gomera and then back again from Nelsons Shipyard, Antigua & Bermuda. No panicking…plenty of time for that!
I’ve started the physical training and have been in contact with a specialist ocean rowing coach and together we will be putting together a fitness programme that should ensure I’m in peak physical condition for the race. Starting sooner will give me a better chance of not only completing but hopefully competing in the race itself so everything I do between now and then will, in some way, be a part of he journey. You can follow my training and other updates on my personal instagram (@ol.french), there will be an official “Noarthman / Noarthmen” account when the lads decide if they’re doing it or not.
The Boat!
An ocean rowing boat is crafted for the singular purpose of enduring the relentless challenges of open-ocean rowing expeditions. What sets it apart is its extraordinary stability, meticulously designed to navigate the tumultuous waves and unpredictable currents of the open sea. These boats boast watertight compartments, ensuring they remain afloat even in the event of a capsize. Their compact yet efficient layout maximizes every inch of space, housing essential living quarters, navigation equipment, and safety gear. Equipped with advanced rowing systems, they harness the rower's power with precision, while reinforced hulls and rugged construction withstand the harshest marine conditions. Desalination systems transform seawater into drinkable sustenance, and specialised rudders and skegs provide precise control. In essence, an ocean rowing boat is a sanctuary of safety, efficiency, and durability, embodying the resilience required for the unparalleled challenges of open-water rowing.
Rannoch boats are the epitome of ocean rowing precision and prowess. Their boats are tailored for each crew and utilise space perfectly. If I had to pick a manufacturer for my boat…this would be it…fingers crossed I can find a way to secure one! There are so many logistical considerations with the rowing boats…transporting for practice, learning maintenence and upkeep, transporting to La Gomera and then (hopefully) back from Antigua. Luckily the race organisers are here to help with most of the transportation process before and after the race.
In undertaking the challenge, it's paramount to acknowledge the potential worst-case scenario. Despite comprehensive safety measures, the vastness of the open sea brings with it inherent unpredictability. The most daunting scenario might involve a critical equipment malfunction or encountering exceptionally severe weather conditions, potentially leading to extended delays or, in extreme cases, retiring from the race entirely. While these circumstances are rare, they serve as a stark reminder of the need for meticulous preparation and an unwavering commitment to safety protocols. It underscores the profound respect and humility required when facing the immense power and unpredictability of the ocean. In confronting these challenges head-on, we fortify our resolve and reaffirm our dedication to the rigorous training and exhaustive planning necessary to navigate this extraordinary adventure.
The Route & Race
Teams set forth from La Gomera, a Spanish island in the Atlantic, aiming to reach Antigua, one of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean. This particular route is favored for several reasons. The timing, typically starting in December, aligns with the trade winds and currents, which are more favorable for eastward crossings. The Northeast Trade Winds provide a reliable tailwind, propelling rowers in the desired direction. Additionally, the challenge coincides with a relatively calmer period in the Atlantic hurricane season, minimizing the risk of encountering dangerous storms. This well-considered route and timing enhance the safety and feasibility of this remarkable transoceanic journey.
To embark on this monumental journey, securing funding and sponsorship is essential. We'll be actively seeking partners who share our vision for adventure and support our mission.
